When writing an academic paper, there are many styles that can be used. Various subjects may tend to use certain styles more than others, so it can be important to know the differences between them, and what is required when writing in a certain style. Some of the more common types include the following:
Depending on the type of paper that is being written, there may be a requirement to include certain sections. In general, the following three main sections will be included in some form within the piece of writing:
Introduction: This may outline the aims of the work, or introduce an idea that is to be discussed. It may also bring in a hypothesis for which the rest of the article attempts to prove or disprove.
Body: This can include any main arguments, or the section can be used to highlight a variety of main points. Essentially, the bulk of the writing may be contained within the section.
Conclusion: The conclusion draws on what was written in the introduction and conclusion. Ideally, there will be no new points raised in this section, but rather the conclusion will focus on any arguments that have already been raised. Alternatively, if it were a scientific paper then it is in this section that the hypothesis will be seen to have been correct or not.
Whilst the introduction, body and conclusion format is common for many papers, for students studying at a higher level, there can be a need to include a wide variety of other sections.
In many ways, some of these sections essentially expand on the basic introduction, body and conclusion format, and enable the writer to be more detailed by introducing more specific content.
