Why You Shouldn't Rely upon an Essay Grammar Checker Available for Free

Online grammar checkers can sometimes save you a lot of time and hassle editing your own papers. After all, it’s much easier to let a computer do it than taking the time to look over every period, comma, and apostrophe yourself! But is a free grammar checker really going to save your grade? Not likely; while it’s a great tool, and one you should use, there are some things you should know about using free grammar checkers on your essay.

  1. They can miss things. Grammar is a very nuanced and delicate thing, and a lot of times there are multiple ways to be right about grammar depending on the context. For example, if you were to say “the dogs’ toys” or “the dog’s toys”, both could potentially be correct. But the actual difference is a major one. “The dogs’ toys” means that you are talking about multiple dogs and their toys. If you say “the dog’s toys”, you’re only talking about one dog. See how tricky that is? A free grammar checker won’t realize that one form is wrong, because they are both technically correct. A grammar checker doesn’t always know what you mean, so it can miss errors.
  2. A grammar checker doesn’t account for personal style. There are many ways to use semi-colons (also known as “;”), and many ways to use colons (also known as “:”). Sometimes, a colon is needed. Sometimes, a semi-colon is needed. But many times, you could use either and still technically be correct in your writing. In those times, it’s all about personal style. It’s about how you write, and how you want a sentence to sound. A grammar checker doesn’t know your personal style or preferences, so it could change something that you don’t want changed. This is especially true if you are writing a personal essay, or a fiction story.
  3. So what’s the solution? Feel free to use a free grammar checker at first. It’s not a bad idea, and it can be useful in many situations. Just make sure that once you’ve used the grammar checker, you go back and edit on your own, or hire an editor to take care of those nit-picky details. One good way to self-edit is to read your paper aloud to yourself. This might make you sound crazy to your roommates, but it’s a great way to pick up on errors that you would otherwise miss!
